St Louis Paperweights

 

St Louis is one of the earlier French Glasssmakers to specialise in Paperweights.
Saint Louis was more properly called the Cristallerie de St Louis at St Louis-les Biche in the Lorraine region of France.

Although there had been a glassworks there since 1469,the Glassworks we now know as St Louis was actually authorised by King Louis XV in 1767.
Because it mainly produced beautiful glass for the King, the standards were very high indeed and these standards have been coninued.

They started by manufacturing high quality Crystal Glass until in the early 1800s they began to produce pressed glass.

In 1829 they changed back to producing Crystal and other fine glasswares.
Paperweights were produced in 1845 and these have been the mainstay of the company ever since.

These were marked with the date of manufacture until 1867.

St Louis are known to have made paperweights in millefiori,lampwork and sulfide techniques and all are very collectable.
