Pate de Verre Glass
Pate de Verre Glass - The phrase pate de verre means Paste of Glass.
Clear or Coloured glass is very finely crushed and then mixed with a binding agent like gum arabic and water and often has enamels or dyes mixed in.
That paste is then normally applied as a covering over the piece and then when it has been heated and cooled, the piece is either engraved or carved to make stuning multi layered effects as a finished Pate de verre glass piece..
This was very popular in Art nouveau Glassware and the specialist in pate de verre glass was the Daum.Brothers
Daum made a paste similar to that used in enamelling except that their paste is appled to the inside of a glass mould and evenly coated.
That then makes a hollow vessel with the coloured glass outside.
This produces quite magical effects and textures
This was a difficult and sometimes dangerous process and few manfactrers worked successfully with it.
